Week in Review September 16, 2009

School Picture Day
Next Friday
September 25th

Here's What's Going on
in the Beacons' World:
Writer's Workshop:
We are continuing to develop "choice" and "fluency" in writing as students choose their own topics. Next week, we'll begin learning about the "6 Traits of Writing." The first trait we incorporate will be the development of "Ideas."

Reading: We are continuing to do formal and informal reading assessments. In addition we have begun reviewing basic reading skills and strategies. We are also reading some classic childrens' literature.

Math: We have begun our first official lessons in our "Math Connects" curriculum. We began Unit 1- Number Patterns and Place Value. We are working on math groupings which we will finalize next week.

Science: This week we delved into the Earth's crust and made models of landforms. We are enjoying being able to make more of a mess in the science lab! Next week we'll get to make our own fossils!

Social Studies:
We're off and flying to Johannesburg, South Africa! For only $1,634.00 each student will fly from Seattle to Atlanta, GA and arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa a mere 25 hours and 5 minutes later! I asked the students to break into teams of two and estimate the time of the flight from Seattle to Atlanta and then onto Johannesburg using deductive reasoning. Believe it or not, one young lady correctly estimated 25 hours. She was 5 minutes off of the correct answer! WOW.We have made our passports and soon we will be on our way with our ticket. VERY exciting to say the least. We also "made" our digital cameras so we can take some "snapshots" of our travels. Stay tuned to see those "photos"!
Next Friday is School Picture Day. Please make sure that your child's picture envelop and check are at school by Friday.
Green Friday Folders are due back, signed, on Monday. The Beacons (and you wonderful parents) are doing a terrific job remembering. Many thanks!
