Here's What's Going on in the Beacon's World:

Reading: Students have been working at improving many aspects of their reading skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, word usage and reading strategies using SRA reading cards. Today I offered a choice between free reading or SRA cards at then end of the language arts block. Over half the students chose to work on their SRA cards! They are each working at an individual level that is challenging yet not frustrating. There are some interesting stories! We'll regroup into more novel studies after the holidays.

Writing: Come on into the classroom and take a look at the wonderful paragraphs the students have written about Africa and volcanoes! We've moved on to the trait of "Sentence Fluency" and this week we're focusing on correcting sentence fragments and run-on sentences.

Math: It's all about multiplication right now! The goal of the next two chapters is to gain a steady foundation of multiplication facts. Students will spend time each day practicing their times tables- then go on to work with multiplication problem solving. Students are working on different skills, depending on their prior knowledge of their facts. For some students, extra practice at home will really help them gain a firm foundation before progressing with more challenging concepts.
While good old fashioned flash cards are fantastic, here are some fun online games for extra practice:

Science: This week, we've wrapped up the unit on Earth's movements. Students loved the exploding volcanoes! We also learned about earthquakes by imitating P- waves with dominoes, played earthquake games on the Internet and finished our unit by watching an informative "Eyewitness" video called, Volcanoes- which nicely summed up much of what we learned.
Next week, we'll be headed to outer space!
Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit on Africa this week with a culminating event of making stenciled t-shirts of our favorite African animal. I'll be working with the students on this project Wednesday and Thursday, so be looking for the GREAT t-shirt to come home with their Friday folder.

We're looking forward to another exciting week with your Beacon,
Betsy and Tamara
