Here's What's Going On in the Beacon's World:
Reading: The group reading Shiloh finished the book and had a great last literature circle where we talked about right, wrong and what lies between. Everyone is now working on SRA skill cards at their own reading level. Students are focusing on comprehension, vocabulary, and other reading skills. We'll also be reading some legends and stories concerning volcanoes.
Writing: We've been creating "paragraph hamburgers". (ask your student what on earth a paragraph has to do with a hamburger!) The students created several of their own paragraphs and began a mini-research project with a selected topic from Africa. Their final drafts will be on display soon.
Math: It's all about subtraction this week. Students are improving their skills subtracting multi-digit numbers across zeros and doing some problem solving with subtraction. Extra subtraction fact practice will really help some students excel.
Science: This week we built the volcanoes and next week we get to research them, write paragraphs about them and yes, BLOW THEM UP!!! Your little vulcanologists are so excited!
Social Studies: We've been reading some Reader's Theater stories from Africa, listening to some stories from a Ugandan storyteller and creating Akua-ba dolls from the Ashante people of Ghana.
The marriage of Pele, goddess of earth and fire, and Kamapuaa, god of water, was short and violent. In a rage she routed him from her crater of fire and chased him with streams of lava into the sea.- Hawaiian Legend.
